It is a current invented by the French writer Jules Champfleury, who for the first time defined his art as 'realistic'. The realistic works try to document documentarily the society of the time and the environments closest to the writer, in opposition to the aesthetics of Romanticism, which indulged in exotic settings and unusual and extravagant characters.

Realism had two currents, a conservative one, which praised the old popular customs and another progressive one, characterized by social denunciation.
